In Belize, Eddie hooks up with Becky, a sexy but flighty scuba instructor. In the Dominican Republic, Eddie again risks exposure when he meets Sister Theresa, a nun who knew him in his past life. Unplayable Lie is much more than a novel about golf and the lessons the game can teach us. It is about coming of age, about attaining goals, and about dealing with the tragedies of life. I am very impressed with this interesting and compelling book. I couldn't put it down. Eddie and his best friend Dude are both excellent athletes, Eddie as a golfer and Dude as an outstanding infielder. Both went to the U. of Arizona on athletic scholarships and were expected to go pro. While Eddie was getting his card, Dude was the victim of a bad accident and lost the full use of his arm. As a result Dude caddied for Eddie in a few golf tournaments while doing physical therapy on his arm. During a tournament, they both witnessed a powerful US Senator murder someone on the golf course. They ran. Dude was killed and Eddie went on the run for 14 years South of the border and in the Dominican Republic. His adventures and eventual return to the US make up the bulk of this fascinating adventure.Product details

I liked everything but the language, which may have been part of the characterization.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery/suspense &/or novels that tell a character's story.
The characters, especially the main character, are well-developed and stay true to character throughout.
The golf incidents are well-told & understandable to a certain extent by non-golfers, so that the reader can feel the excitement of the competition.
I would have given it 5 stars if the language had been less rough - purely a matter of personal taste.
This book was slow for me to first get into as it involves alot of detailed talk about golf and how its played, and i do not play golf so that was boring to me. Once I got past focusing on the golf, and became pulled into the story and plot, I literally could not put it down. Really an excellant story,
I really enjoy playing golf...maybe I even qualify as a golf nut, so I enjoyed the golf part of the book. But, there is a good story here for the non-golfer and I believe you will enjoy it.
I had never heard of this author but I now know he has written others and will check those out, especially if they are about golf.
Intriguing plot line. Author is obviously a golfer, with great descriptions of competitive play, but non-golfers will be captivated, as well. After the main character witnesses a murder in the opening pages and is forced to go on the lam to avoid being killed, his options and decisions are intelligently and interestingly developed. Recommend!
I liked it. I didn’t think I would, because it’s about golf. There are golf scenes in here, lots of golf scenes, I mean, lots and lots of golf scenes. If you know or like golf, you’ll love the drama of the game, and even if you don’t, it’s a good read about strategies and wind, angles and slopes, struggles and emotions. The reader will understand the metaphor of the title when the hero changes his name.
At first it seemed to me that the main character wasn’t very likeable. I think the author did that on purpose, because my opinion changed as I read. A good writer will always make his characters grow, and that’s what happens.
As I approached the end, I said to myself, “How the hell is this novelist going to solve this murder and make everything work out?” It’s fascinating how he did it, where everybody wins, unlike a game of golf. It's great twist, and completely unexpected.

Given that "Unplayable Lie" had what seemed to be a very implausible plot, I was prepared to dislike it. David Robinson pulled a fast one on me though, by making his characters likable and sympathetic...well, except for the main villain of course. As a golfer, I really enjoyed the descriptions of the fellowship and "zen" found through playing this game. As an added bonus, the plot stayed within the realm of possibility, and was fun to read.
If this is Mr. Robinson's first novel, then he deserves a "Get in the HOLE!!!" for this well-struck effort!
First, I should say I'm not a golfer, not even a golf fan. But I am a huge suspense/mystery fan and the author had me from the first page. Who can resist a potential presidential candidate shooting (and killing!) someone on the golf course?
My husband, however, is a golfer, a golf fan and a big reader of mysteries (all the Lee Child and Barry Eisler books, for example) so I thought this would be the perfect gift for him. As usual, when a book arrives from , I immediately glance through it - this time I read the whole book straight through before handing it over.
It turns out that the murder was witnessed by a rising young golf pro, Eddie Bennett, and his best friend/caddy. I am not going to give away the plot any further because you will get caught up in Eddie's dilemma, his past life and his life from that fateful day forward. And I advise you not to read the back cover of the book which gives away waaay too much.
The author clearly knows his way around the golfing world. He has a good gift for dialog and doesn't indulge in over-the-top Jack Reacher-type stunts, so the story remains intriguing and the reader is totally able to relate to Eddie's decisions. I liked and came to root for the good guys, which is important to me as a reader.
I look forward to Robinson's next book - maybe it could take place on a ski slope!
